🔍 How to Improve Scanned Document Quality: Lighting, Crop, Skew and Readability

By the MZScan team · Updated 17 October 2026 · 4 min read

A scan can be perfectly readable or frustratingly poor, and in most cases the difference is decided before you press any button. This guide gives you a practical order of work: get a good photo first, fix the crop, then use the scanner controls to clean up the page and check that small text and numbers are really readable.

Start with the photo, not the settings

Software can brighten a page and remove a shadow, but it cannot invent detail that the camera never captured. Spend a minute on the photo and you will need far fewer corrections later.

Fix skew and cropping

A page that is tilted or cropped unevenly looks unprofessional and is harder to read. In the MZScan scanner, try Auto crop first, then drag the corners by hand if the edges are not exactly right. If the photo is sideways, use Rotate left or Rotate right. Leave a very thin margin of background around the page rather than cutting into the text.

Use the scanner controls in the right order

The scanner offers four modes and four sliders. Work in this order:

  1. Pick a mode. Magic Doc suits most printed pages, B&W Scan gives the crispest text for forms and contracts, Grayscale keeps light pencil and soft shading, and Color keeps stamps, coloured ink and photos.
  2. Shadow removal evens out hand and phone shadows. Raise it if one side of the page is darker than the other.
  3. Whiteness turns a grey or yellow page background white. Raise it a little at a time, because too much can wash out thin lines.
  4. Text darkness makes faint print stronger. It helps with light photocopies and thin fonts.
  5. Sharpness crisps up soft edges. Use a moderate amount, because too much creates a rough, noisy look around letters.

While you adjust, press and hold Original to compare the result with your untouched photo.

Check readability before you save

Zoom the preview in to 100 percent and read the smallest text on the page. Check numbers carefully (dates, amounts, ID numbers), because they are the first thing to go wrong when a scan is too soft or too harsh. If any digit is unclear, retake the photo rather than pushing the sliders harder.

When you should retake the photo

Fixing these in software never gives the same result as a better photo.

Choose the right format when saving

Save as PNG when you want the sharpest text, JPG for smaller files, or use All as PDF to combine several pages into one document. If a website limits the file size, shrink the result with the image compressor. More on formats in PDF vs JPG vs PNG.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my scan look grey?
The paper background is probably dark in the photo. Retake it in brighter, even light, then raise Whiteness a little.

Why do I still see a shadow?
Increase Shadow removal and make sure your hand or phone did not cast a strong shadow when you took the photo.

Is a higher camera resolution always better?
A sharp, well-lit photo matters more than raw megapixels. A blurry high-resolution photo is still blurry.

Your files stay on your device. Nothing is uploaded.
