📚 How to Scan Book Pages and Handwritten Notes Clearly
By the MZScan team · Updated 17 October 2026 · 3 min read
Book pages and handwritten notes are harder to scan than a flat printed sheet. Book pages curve towards the spine and throw shadows, and pencil or light ink can disappear if the wrong mode is used. A few small habits and the right settings make both look clean.
Scanning book pages
- Open the book on a table and press the page flat near the spine, without damaging the binding. Never force an old or fragile book open.
- Light the page from the side so that your hand and phone do not cast a shadow.
- Hold the phone square above the page. Photograph one page at a time, or one spread if you want both pages in one image.
- In the scanner, use Auto crop and move the corners so the curved edge near the binding is outside the selection.
- Choose Magic Doc and raise Shadow removal to even out the dark strip near the spine.
Only copy what you are allowed to copy. Scanning a few pages for personal study is different from copying a whole book, and rules differ between countries and publishers.
Scanning handwritten notes
- Use a dark pen on plain white paper whenever you can, because pale pencil is the hardest thing to scan.
- Choose Grayscale or Color. B&W Scan can erase light strokes completely.
- Raise Text darkness a little for faint ink, and raise Whiteness only enough to clean the paper.
- Keep Sharpness moderate, because too much makes handwriting look rough.
Notebooks with lines or grids
Ruled paper adds extra lines that compete with the writing. If the lines look too strong, try a small increase in Whiteness. If the writing becomes too thin, bring it back down and rely on Text darkness instead.
Keep pages in order
Number the pages lightly in the corner of your notes before you start, or scan them in order and name each file with a number, such as physics-notes-01, physics-notes-02. Then combine them with Image to PDF or press All as PDF in the scanner.
Check before you move on
Zoom in on the smallest words, on numbers and on any diagrams. Make sure the whole page, including the page number, is inside the frame. If part of a diagram is cut off, retake the photo.
Reduce the file size if needed
A PDF of many page photos can be large. Before building the PDF, shrink the images with the image compressor, or choose Normal quality in Image to PDF. See also how to reduce image size without losing quality.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Scanning pencil notes in B&W mode, which turns light strokes into nothing.
- Leaving the curved binding edge inside the crop, so the page looks bent.
- Letting your hand or the phone shade one half of the page.
- Raising Sharpness too high, which makes handwriting look rough and noisy.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my pencil handwriting disappear?
B&W mode removes light grey strokes. Switch to Grayscale or Color and increase Text darkness slightly.
How do I avoid the dark strip near the spine?
Light the page from the side, press it flat, and raise Shadow removal. Crop away the curved edge.
Can I scan two pages at once?
Yes, photograph the whole spread. For the cleanest text, scanning one page at a time is better.
